Harvey Carter – A Living Legend

Props to Lou Dawson for recommending this excellent article on climbing pioneer Harvey Carter. I’ve always heard he was a character, and you really get a sense of that reading this piece. Lou also posted a gripping account of a climbing experience with Harvey, one of two times Lou says that Harvey “saved his life.” Both are great reads and worth the time. What else have you got to do on this beautiful Monday morning?

It’s interesting to read about a guy like Harvey, with thousands of first ascents under his belt, and a strict adherence to “traditional” ethics. Though, I can’t help but see the paradox between his disdain for bolts, and his desire to start a new ski area on Pikes Peak. I mean, holy cow, ski resorts are way more damaging to the environment than a few small pieces of metal in a rock! But I guess that’s just my own jaded take on things.
