Without a doubt, my favorite event of the year in Carbondale is the 5Point Film Festival. Over the last couple of years, it’s quietly become a premier gathering of outdoor film makers, with a focus on stories that reflect the festival’s five guiding principals: Respect, Commitment, Humility, Purpose & Balance.
You’re more likely to watch a film about a kid from the streets who found snowboarding and is now a pro athlete than some young bucks hucking themselves off huge lines to dub step. Or maybe find out what it’s like to be a 93 year old man living off the grid in the wilds of California.
This year’s lineup looks incredibly varied, from Duct Tape surfing to treehouses in Japan to a cold night on Fitz Roy, and what could be the highlight of the weekend, Damnation. An exploration of the changing attitudes about dams in America, and the restoration that their removal brings to the rivers they once suffocated. Check out the full program and schedule of events here. A few other things that you wont want to miss:
Van Life Rally
Thursday, April 24, 5pm, Carbondale Rec Center
Don’t miss this “open house” of livable vehicles. Chat with special guests and get stoked for the weekend to come.
Live Enormocast
Friday, April 25th, 10am-11am, Bonfire Coffee
Gather round the microphone as Chris Kalous improvises with some of the festival’s special guests.
Dirtbag Diaries Live
Saturday, April 26th, 11am – 1:30pm, Steve’s Guitars
Sleep in and then join Fitz Cahall for some storytelling and inspiration.
Still on the fence? It’s also a great time to come visit the Roaring Fork Valley, as the snow has started to melt, you can access many of the local crags, and if you want to ski, the big peaks are coming into prime condition.
Add to that all the friends you could hope to meet, and you have an incredibly awesome weekend.
Interested? If so, then don’t hesitate. Each year the event sells out faster and faster, so if you want to come, buy your tickets now! This year’s trailer isn’t up yet, but here’s a teaser and the trailer from last year posted below it:

Hayden Carpenter and Tom Bohanon recently repeated an obscure ice climb on the south side of Mt Sopris. Given a brief mention in Jack Robert’s ice guide, Bulldog Creek Walk is described as being 100 meters of WI 4. What they found was seven pitches of ice in a remote setting that makes for one […]
