Alpinist Magazine Rises From the Ashes

Like the legendary Phoenix, Alpinist has risen again, hopefully into something equally impressive. Michael Kennedy, former owner and editor of Climbing Magazine, has been named as Editor-In-Chief, and they are planning on launching issue 26 on April 15th. According to the official press release, Kennedy says:

“My aim is to continue to explore the heart and soul of the climbing experience, building on the incredible foundation Alpinist has developed over the last six years.”

Dougald McDonald has some more info posted on his blog, where he further quotes Kennedy as saying:

“The new Alpinist may have a few more ad pages, but the content will remain every bit as beautiful and compelling as ever. You’ll still see plenty of stories and photos of cutting-edge alpine climbs. In seeking to appeal to a broader spectrum of climbers, my intention is to open Alpinist up a bit in tone and voice, to focus on what climbers have in common, to inspire and express the very best of the climbing experience at all levels.”

I think it’ll be interesting see how this all pans out, given the current economic climate. Of course we hope to see them continue on the tradition of excellence that the magazine became so well known for, but most importantly, I wonder if my old subscription will be honored…

  1. Thanks for posting this. We are working hard to get the first “new” issue out.

For anyone who asks, Height Of Land, the new publisher/owner of Alpinist, is honoring all existing subscriptions.

Go to alpinist.com and click on the link at the bottom of the announcement on the home page. You can check the status of your subscription, change address, renew, etc.

Bulldog Creek Dog Walk (IV WI 4+)

Hayden Carpenter and Tom Bohanon recently repeated an obscure ice climb on the south side of Mt Sopris. Given a brief mention in Jack Robert’s ice guide, Bulldog Creek Walk is described as being 100 meters of WI 4. What they found was seven pitches of ice in a remote setting that makes for one […]
