Dead Horse Canyon Topo

Well, just in time for the winter weather which seems to have decided to show up, here’s a topo for the Dead Horse Crag (PDF). It’s a cool little wall in Glenwood Canyon, 5 minutes off the Hanging Lake trail. Given the fact that NOAA is predicting a dryer and warmer winter for Colorado, this could be a good cragging option in the coming months.

Plan on taking a single set of cams, up to a #5 Camalot (new size) for some of the big horizontals. It’s great climbing, similar in fashion to the Gunks, only shorter and no greasy New Yorkers. Most routes are protected by a mix of bolts and gear. The wall IS highly visible from the Hanging Lake trail, so try to act like responsible folks.

  1. Check this area out. I may be biased, but it’s a super fun area. With the mild weather we’ve had you can definitely still climb here. The cliff also stays completely dry during rainstorms and after a night of rain, you can still find dry rock to climb on. It may be short, but it packs a punch and there’s nothing else quite like it on the Western Slope.
