Alpine Climbs
The Elk Mountains are home to some of the most rugged peaks in the state. The Maroon Bells are world famous, being arguably the most photagraphed in Colorado. While many diss the Elks as big piles of choss, there are some great climbing opportunities here, from ridge traverses to alpine ice filled couloirs. Much of the climbing in the high peaks has not been well documented, which means there is still plenty of adventure to be had out there.
Capitol Peak
Considered to be one of the most difficult 14ers in the state, the north face of Capitol offers a couple of different routes, depending on conditions.
Mt. Sopris
This iconic peak looms above the town of Carbondale and the confluence of the Crystal and Roaring Fork rivers. Skiers and mountaineers looking for a challenge have been drawn to the Laundry Chutes for many years.
Pyramid Peak
While many associate this peak with loose rock in the summer, in the colder months you can find alpine ice on its north face.
